Intel and Micron want to increase capacity of laptop memory

Boise / Santa Clara (AP) - More than 10 terabytes of data should be able to take a conventional memory card for laptops with new memory cells that Intel developed jointly with the US company Micron Technology.

External memory cards for about PCs today have a capacity of around 1 to 3 terabytes. For the increased capacity, the companies have arranged the memory cells in three-dimensional architecture. In the conventional production of flash memory, the physical limits are nearly exhausted, Intel said on Thursday (local time).

The new technology should a "dramatic effect" on it have to be able to produce memory cards with higher performance at a lower cost in the future, says Intel. And on kleistem room. A chewing gum sticks large memory stick should therefore can hold around 3.5 terabytes of data. Samsung had launched its first 3D memory on the market last year. Intel and Micron process should bring three times the power, according to the company.

The individual memory cells of flash memories about laptops are usually positioned next to each other. By now, the researchers arrange the cells above the other in 32 layers, the cells could be significantly larger, such as Intel announced. Thus, should both performance and endurance of the memory can be increased. The new memory are also suitable for use in data centers. The production of memory have already begun in the fourth quarter, it should be ready for production.
